SUMMARY: Reporting to the Manager of Medical Engineering, the Biomedical Equipment Specialist works closely with the Radiology department chief, administrative managers, Biomedical Technologies and other Medical Engineering staff to ensure the appropriate and timely maintenance, repair, modification and evaluation of radiology, radiation oncology and other highly sophisticated and state of the art electronic and mechanical equipment. The core Success Factors include: Instill Trust and Value Differences Patient and Community Focus and Collaborate RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversees the preventive maintenance, repair, and quality performance of radiology equipment and ultrasound imaging systems made by various vendors, such as but not limited to, GE, Siemens, Philips, Toshiba Picker, etc, including digital imaging rooms. Repairs and maintains diagnostic radiology and therapeutic radiation therapy equipment, such as control generators, electro-mechanically controlled patient table, film handling devices and battery-powered portable X-ray units. Coordinate outside service vendors ' activities in performance and cost tracking. Coordinates activities with Radiology Physics quality assurance to ensure quality performance and radiation safety of radiology devices. Works with administrative managers and department directors on the capital equipment needs evaluation, acquisition and installation process. Provides input into the development of capital equipment maintenance budgeting. Evaluates and recommends maintenance training and service tools to properly maintain the equipment. Recommends design of and, as necessary, may fabricate specific instruments and equipment which are not commercially available in order to meet special requirements for research or clinical studies. Acts as a consultant regarding technical work conducted by other personnel. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Associates degree in electronics or related program, plus completion of significant factory training programs related to repair and maintenance of radiation equipment – both diagnostic and therapeutic. High level of analytical skills and the ability to diagnose problems with equipment in order to effect repairs in a timely manner. Ability to use computer-based diagnostic tools in complex hardware and software troubleshooting. Ability to use computerized equipment maintenance system documenting all service activities. Thorough knowledge of electrical, electronic and mechanical principles including mathematical skills is essential to the job. Must be able to comprehend electrical and basic mechanical drawings including, but not limited to, timing diagrams, logic diagrams, circuit diagrams, and mechanical assembly drawings for mechanical part location and identification information. EXPERIENCE: At least five years experience on the maintenance and/or installation of diagnostic and therapeutic radiation equipment, ultrasound imaging or nuclear medicine. Experience should demonstrate thorough understanding of the use, calibration and maintenance of a wide variety of electronic and mechanical equipment. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: May perform work in patient care areas where there is exposure to communicable diseases. May also be exposed to blood and/or body fluids when inspecting and repairing equipment. Potential hazards of electrical shock or radiation exposure. Moves and lifts medium weight biomedical equipment. Considerable walking. Uses hand and power tools. Hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety policies and precautions. $35.20-$58.07
