Nurse Scientist

Summary:

The Nurse Scientist is responsible for providing leadership and expertise in the development design implementation and dissemination of nurse-driven research quality improvement (QI) projects and evidence-based practice (EBP) to improve patient care enhance outcomes and drive excellence in nursing practice via innovative solutions. Aligned with the organization�s mission vision and strategic goals this role serves as change agent and advisor implementing an infrastructure that advances EBP QI and generation of nursing knowledge through research. The Nurse Scientist promotes a culture of inquiry bridging the gap between research and practice by engaging nurses in EBP QI and research developing and delivering resources in support of these activities fostering mentorship and advancing nursing knowledge in accordance with professional and Magnet standards. Activities may involve collaborating with professional governance councils creating workflows and processes to meet program needs educating staff keeping up-to-date with relevant literature leading program improvements and offering feedback and guidance to nurses at all levels of the organization. 

 

Responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collaborate with nursing leadership to develop and evaluate strategic plans for nursing research and scholarship consistent with organizational priorities and objectives.

Promote a nursing-focused research agenda and model the value of clinical research QI and EBP in the practice environment.

Serve on and partner with relevant councils committees workgroups and boards as assigned (e.g. Institutional Review Board professional governance councils).

Foster clinical inquiry and research at all levels of nursing to advance innovations across all aspects of healthcare delivery.

Develop deliver and lead educational programs supporting translation of the research process into practical steps for nursing staff supporting professional growth and skill development.

Promote competency in research design statistical methods and dissemination of nursing knowledge by providing instruction consultation support mentorship and review of nursing research QI and EBP initiatives including abstract presentation and manuscript development.

Partner with relevant departments and program leads to support align and integrate research QI and EBP standards processes and best practices in emerging and existing programs/clinical practice (e.g. Nurse Residency Programs Clinical Advancement Programs).

Evaluate the impact of outcomes related to the work of the Nurse Scientist as measured by impact on patient outcomes efficiency nurse-sensitive indicators cost reduction nurse engagement and visibility of Brown University Health�s research QI and EBP both internally and externally.

Maintain research registries and annual reporting of all nursing research presentations and publications at the local regional national and international level; further supporting dissemination of nursing knowledge at internal and external venues.

Identify and engage with funding sources to secure financial support for nursing and interprofessional research including but not limited to grant writing/submission and collaboration with Brown University Health Foundation Boards and other in-house local regional federal private and professional avenues.

Maintain professional networks and cultivate multi-site research collaborations via partnerships both in- and outside the system between hospitals clinical sites academic institutions research organizations healthcare partners and other relevant organizations to promote programmatic growth.

Promote excellence in nursing practice through consistent application and alignment with ANCC Magnet Program standards accreditation criteria and strategic goals of both the organization and nursing department.

SKILLS

    • Effective written/verbal communication skills including grant writing professional presentations and publications extending to diverse constituencies at all levels of the organization.
    • In-depth knowledge of nursing research models concepts methodologies and theories related to professional nursing practice and improved patient care outcomes.
    • Strong command of research design planning methodologies change agency project management and evidence-based practice skills using a data-driven approach.
    • Familiarity with Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes current health care trends and nursing research priorities.
    • Knowledge of research-related ethics and the scientific method.
    • Competency with computer applications for data analysis writing and information presentation.
    • Passion for research teaching lifelong learning excellence professional nursing practice quality and patient safety.
    • Proven ability to build relationships and collaborative alliances that enhance nursing practice and research; exceptional interpersonal and interprofessional skills.

Other information:

QUALIFICATIONS-EDUCATION:
Baccalaureate in Nursing required.

Doctorate required (Nursing or related Health Care field acceptable; PhD preferred). Consideration will be given to internal candidates committed to completing a doctoral program.

Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island or in another state that participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact.

 

Certification in a specialty area is preferred; must be eligible for certification.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS-EXPERIENCE:
Three years� experience in healthcare supervision administration or hospital operations (Five plus years preferred).

 

Three to five years� direct research experience (preferred).

 

Experience working with Institutional Review Boards (preferred).

 

Experience developing nursing research QI and EBP programming.

 

Meets standard qualifications necessary to be considered for a faculty role at applicable Schools of Medicine and/or Nursing (preferred).

 

Familiarity with the Microsoft Office product Suite including Word Outlook Excel PowerPoint and Visio.

 

Proficiency with Epic and demonstrated comfort with technology utilized throughout the patient care processes.
