Lead Registered Nurse Cardiac Cath and EP Labs

Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Operations and Assistant Clinical Managers of the cardiac cath and EP labs the lead nurse coordinate direct and supervise patient care and patient flow within the cardiac cath and electrophysiology labs. Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients having procedures in the cardiac cath and electrophysiology labs in accordance with the hospital and department established policies and procedures and physician orders.

All essential functions performed in the position reflect age specific needs of the geriatric adult and pediatric patients. Fosters patient and family centered care and nursing services in accordance with the Brown University Health and Rhode Island Hospital mission vision and values with consideration of the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.

Responsibilities:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide and direct nursing care within Cardiac Cath and Electrophysiology Labs with consideration of the aging process developmental and cultural patterns in each step of the nursing process.

Review daily procedure schedule assess patient care needs and coordinate caseload and department flow with room equipment and staff availability.

Collaborate with physicians and Procedural care unit (PCU) charge nurse to provide timely care to add-on patients based on acuity.

Ensure that correct preparation is complete for all lab cases in accordance with department and procedural guidelines.

Collaborate with physicians and team members to ensure on time starts and efficient case turnover.

Attend morning huddle and share pertinent patient and procedural information with PCU and lab team members in a timely manner.

Ensure equipment is maintained in proper working order and that malfunctioning equipment is removed form use and repaired or replaced.

Ensure daily lab safety checks are completed on schedule.

Works with Manager and ACM to:

Ensure compliance with outside regulatory and accrediting agency standards.

Ensure compliance with RIH mandatory education credentialing and nursing and department standards.

Identify and resolve patient care conflicts.

Communicate and document staff performance with recommendations for quality and growth.

Document nursing team member performance concerns.

Develop policies procedures and standards of care to promote positive patient outcomes.

Interview and select nursing applicants.

Orient and evaluate newly hired nurses.

Assist ACM to coordinate/create nursing work schedule.

Assist manager and ACM with billing charges as needed.

Participate in professional organizations.

Serve on various hospital committees as assigned.

Understands and practice ALARA principles of Radiation Protection including the use and exchange of personal dosimeters.

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.

Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.

ACLS & BLS certified.

Demonstrated mature judgment initiative and proficiency in nursing skills.

Is able to work without direct supervision.

Is knowledgeable in physical assessment aseptic and sterile techniques IV skills and universal precautions.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

 

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum 2 years Cardiac Cath or Electrophysiology experience preferred.

Minimum 2 years critical care experience.

One-year supervisory experience preferred.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Performs independently within department policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervisory responsibility for up to 50 FTE�s.
