Registered Nurse - Consult Liaison Services

Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Clinical Director of Consult Liaison Services the Registered Nurse�s focus will be strongly focused on coordinating psychiatric consult cases facilitating psychiatric patient admissions supporting trainees and medical staff and collaborating with the medical support team while following hospital and departmental policies and procedures. 

Responsibilities:

Consult Coordination & Triage:

  • Oversee incoming psychiatry consults to track and triage level of priority cases from the Emergency Department and medical units throughout the hospital. 
  • Coordinate assignment of consults to attending psychiatrists residents and students.

Behavioral Health Admission Support: 

  • Report data about behavioral health patients awaiting psychiatric placement to BHDDH RIH and other affiliates as necessary. 
  • Facilitate the referral process from inception to completion to state psychiatric hospitals including but not limited to obtaining prior health insurance authorization as necessary completing and delivering legal documentation and communicating effectively the directions of this process to the primary medical team. 
  • Maintain a real-time tracking system for patients waiting for psychiatric beds and coordinate follow up care/evaluation as needed.

 Trainee & Team Support:

  • Orient and coordinate trainees rotating with the psychiatry services including guidance on clinical workflow and expectations. 
  • Assist the primary care team with psychiatry-related questions and concerns.
  • Support attending psychiatrists with collateral information as needed for patient evaluations.

 Legal & Policy Compliance:

  • Understand the behavioral health hospital policies and procedures. 
  • Educate and guide medical team patients and families in behavioral health policies and laws.
  • Complete and understand the complexity of legal documentation necessary to appropriately transfer a patient to another hospital.

Patient Safety & Crisis Intervention:

  • Respond to CODE GREY calls to assist in the de-escalation of agitated and dysregulated patients in collaboration with the medical support team throughout the hospital.
  • Serve as a resource for hospital staff to promote patient and staff safety. 

Collaboration & Meetings:

  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to enhance coordination between departments. 
  • Attend multidisciplinary patient and family meetings to optimize coordination of care. 
  • Collaborate with hospital staff behavioral health specialists and administrative teams to optimize patient care. 
  • Collaborate and communicate with patients regarding their treatment plans options and goals of care established by the psychiatry team.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Active RN license

EXPERIENCE:

Prior experience in psychiatric nursing behavioral health and/or med-surge experience preferred.
