Advanced Practice Providers (Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants) provide comprehensive care to patients with a wide variety of brain and spine disorders on the inpatient Neurosurgery floor service (non-ICU setting) at a level one trauma center. Primary duties include the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients in the preoperative and postoperative setting. The Advanced Practice Provider will serve as first responder in the event of patient status changes, orders, and situations including procedural or resuscitative interventions.
Advanced Practice Providers are an integral member of the multidisciplinary health care team, providing comprehensive care of our neurosurgical patients from admission until discharge. The Advanced Practice Provider works in conjunction with neurosurgical attending and resident doctors to evaluate and consult patients in the Emergency Room, learning to make a variety of neurosurgical diagnoses and formulating and implementing treatment plans.
Advanced Practice Provider team members will be involved with patients' perioperative care, preparing patients for the operating room, placing post-operative orders, and interpreting daily imaging studies and laboratory tests. Advanced Practice Providers will also have the opportunity to perform simple bedside procedures such as removing surgical drains and sutures and programming shunts. If interested, they can also receive training on how to place central lines, arterial lines, lumbar drains, and external ventricular drains.
They are accountable to facilitate a quality hospital experience and outcome for patients within a cost-effective time frame. The Advanced Practice Provider will be responsible to the Medical Director of Patient Services and oversee the progress of a specific caseload of patients across the care continuum to include pre-admission and post-discharge when feasible. They act as an educator, consultant, and liaison to healthcare providers caring for the patients across the care continuum.
