Behavioral Health Specialist I (BHS I)

Location: Brown University Health
Department: Behavioral Health (Inpatient/Partial Programs)

Position Summary

The Behavioral Health Specialist I (BHS I) provides direct care, supervision, and safety for children and adolescents in a behavioral health setting. Working under the direction of nursing leadership, this role supports the daily structure of a therapeutic milieu, implements care plans, and contributes to a safe, supportive, and structured environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients
  • Actively engage with children/adolescents throughout each shift
  • Support development and implementation of individualized care and milieu plans
  • Monitor and document patient observations, behaviors, and progress
  • Assist with daily routines and activities of daily living (ADLs), including hygiene
  • Respond to behavioral crises using safe, least-restrictive interventions
  • Participate in treatment team meetings, rounds, and shift reports
  • Communicate observations and collaborate with interdisciplinary team members
  • Support patient admissions and family interactions as needed
  • Co-lead therapeutic, recreational, and skills-based groups
  • Model appropriate, professional, and therapeutic interactions
  • Complete incident reports and required documentation accurately and timely
  • Follow all hospital, program, and safety policies

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or related field preferred (or equivalent experience)

  • 6–12 months experience working with emotionally or behaviorally challenged youth

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment

  • Required certifications (or willingness to obtain):

    • Crisis Management / Safety Care
    • CPR
    • ERS, Safety, and OSHA

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

  • Psychiatric/behavioral health setting
  • Fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • May support multiple programs based on organizational needs
  • No supervisory responsibilities

Pay Range: $18.13-$29.90
