Classroom Behavior Specialist

SUMMARY

In collaboration with the classroom team, is responsible for assisting the Special Education Teacher with the implementation of effective academic and social-emotional programming for assigned students.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In collaboration with the classroom team, the responsibilities include:

• Assisting in the formulation of social-emotional and behavioral programming consistent with students’ IEPs.
• Implementing social-emotional and behavioral programming consistent with students’ IEPs, which may include assisting students with activities of daily life such as toileting and other forms of self-care.
• Collecting and managing data on social-emotional and behavioral functioning for assigned students.
• Preparing and presenting verbal and/or written reports concerning social-emotional and behavioral functioning for assigned students.
• Assisting in the implementation of the academic and social-emotional curricula as directed by the classroom teacher and team leader.
• Providing academic support to students as directed by the classroom teacher.
• Preparing and submitting required paperwork for the student record.
• Attending and participating in classroom team meetings and other student-related meetings as assigned.
• Attending and participating in supervisory sessions, staff meetings, or other meetings as assigned.
• Observing all Bradley Schools policies, rules, and regulations.
• Performing other duties as required, assigned, or directed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

• Baccalaureate Degree preferred with a major in education or related human service fields.
• Basic knowledge of data entry/management programs such as Excel. For those without this background upon hire, Excel training will be provided.
• Bradley Hospital Safety Care Certification.

EXPERIENCE:

• Prior experience working with children is helpful.
• Performs independently within department policies and practices.
• Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.

Employees in this position work in a psychiatric setting under stressful conditions associated with care of psychiatrically impaired, aggressive, and sometimes self-injurious students. Employees are expected to utilize de-escalation techniques taught by LSS to minimize the need for physical intervention. They must have the ability to remain calm during a crisis situation as evidenced by the ability to make quick rational decisions and prioritize immediate student care needs to maintain a therapeutic environment and ensure safety.

Employees in this position must also be able to participate in the physical management of students which can include, but is not limited to:

• Awareness and demonstration of safe body positioning at all times.
• Awareness and coordination to block and deflect possible aggression.
• The ability to physically hold struggling students, using approved methods only, to maintain safety for extended periods of time.

Specifically, such employees must be able to:

• Lift up to fifty pounds.
• Reach with their hands and arms.
• Grasp and hold with their hands.
• Bend/squat/kneel without limitation.
• Physically escort students who may become combative for short distances.

Position requires occasional running for short distances, and frequent standing, walking, and sitting.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None.
