SUMMARY
In collaboration with the classroom team, is responsible for assisting the Special Education Teacher with the implementation of effective academic and social-emotional programming for assigned students.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In collaboration with the classroom team, the responsibilities include:
- Assisting in the formulation of social-emotional and behavioral programming consistent with students’ IEPs.
- Implementing social-emotional and behavioral programming consistent with students’ IEPs, which may include assisting students with activities of daily life such as toileting and other forms of self-care.
- Collecting and managing data on social-emotional and behavioral functioning for assigned students.
- Preparing and presenting verbal and/or written reports concerning social-emotional and behavioral functioning for assigned students.
- Assisting in the implementation of the academic and social-emotional curricula as directed by the classroom teacher and team leader.
- Providing academic support to students as directed by the classroom teacher.
- Preparing and submitting required paperwork for the student record.
- Attending and participating in classroom team meetings and other student-related meetings as assigned.
- Attending and participating in supervisory sessions, staff meetings, or other meetings as assigned.
- Observing all Bradley Schools policies, rules, and regulations.
- Performing other duties as required, assigned, or directed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
- Baccalaureate Degree preferred with a major in education or related human service fields.
- Basic knowledge of data entry/management programs such as Excel. For those without this background upon hire, Excel training will be provided.
- Bradley Hospital Safety Care Certification.
EXPERIENCE:
- Prior experience working with children is helpful.
- Performs independently within department policies and practices.
- Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
Employees in this position work in a psychiatric setting under stressful conditions associated with care of psychiatrically impaired, aggressive, and sometimes self-injurious students. Employees are expected to utilize de-escalation techniques taught by LSS to minimize the need for physical intervention. They must have the ability to remain calm during a crisis situation as evidenced by the ability to make quick rational decisions and prioritize immediate student care needs to maintain a therapeutic environment and ensure safety.
Employees in this position must also be able to participate in the physical management of students which can include, but is not limited to:
- Awareness and demonstration of safe body positioning at all times.
- Awareness and coordination to block and deflect possible aggression.
- The ability to physically hold struggling students, using approved methods only, to maintain safety for extended periods of time.
Specifically, such employees must be able to:
- Lift up to fifty pounds.
- Reach with their hands and arms.
- Grasp and hold with their hands.
- Bend/squat/kneel without limitation.
- Physically escort students who may become combative for short distances.
Position requires occasional running for short distances, and frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None.
