Summary
The Clinical Lab Assistant (CLA) reports to a Senior Technologist or Manager. Under general supervision, and following appropriate training and documented competency, the CLA performs complex laboratory testing within an assigned lab section.
The CLA supports all phases of laboratory operations, including:
- Pre-analytical
- Analytical
- Post-analytical
This role requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret laboratory tests. Preferred candidates will have collegiate experience in the sciences, particularly as it relates to laboratory work.

Responsibilities
Principal Duties
- Receive specimens, verify patient identification, and assess sample appropriateness
- Perform add-ons, reprint labels, and aliquot samples while avoiding contamination or mislabeling
- Understand clinical tests, specimen handling requirements, and testing methodologies
- Recognize the clinical significance of test results
- Collaborate with laboratory staff to confirm unusual results or procedural variations
- Report results to ordering physicians and/or the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) as required
- Assist with orientation and training of new employees
- Learn and adapt to new test procedures as introduced
- Troubleshoot operational issues, including order discrepancies and sample integrity concerns
Laboratory Operations
- Load specimens onto automation systems
- Respond to pneumatic tube deliveries
- Process blood culture samples
- Perform waived testing
- Conduct daily maintenance, calibration, and quality control of laboratory instruments
Blood Bank Duties (when applicable)
- Handle blood products and maintain appropriate inventory levels
- Serve as liaison between Blood Bank and Operating Room (OR)
- Maintain OR blood storage refrigerators
- Ensure testing is complete for OR patients
General Duties
Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and workspaces
Monitor and restock laboratory supplies to maintain readiness
Participate in the Quality Management (QM) program, including:
- Entering patient safety events
- Verifying manually entered results
Follow all policies related to:
- Quality Management (QM)
- Safety
- Infection Control
- HIPAA compliance
Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in a laboratory science field such as:
- Chemical Science
- Biological Science
- Clinical Laboratory Science
- Medical Technology
Experience
- Collegiate-level experience in the sciences, preferably laboratory-related
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Ability to operate laboratory equipment and follow detailed procedures
Proficiency with computers and navigating online resources for testing requirements
Strong visual and physical dexterity for conducting and interpreting tests
Ability to stand for extended periods in laboratory or OR settings
Exposure to:
- Odors
- Infectious materials
- Toxins and hazardous substances
Ability to lift and carry supplies as needed
Independence & Decision-Making
- Works independently within established departmental policies and procedures
- Escalates complex issues to a Specialist, Manager, or Director as needed
