Summary
The Clinical Lab Assistant (CLA) reports to a Senior Technologist or Manager and works under general supervision. With appropriate training and documented competency, the CLA performs complex laboratory testing within assigned lab sections.
This role supports all phases of laboratory operations, including pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes. The CLA is expected to demonstrate a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret test results and should have collegiate-level experience in the sciences, particularly in laboratory settings.

Responsibilities
Specimen Handling & Processing
- Receive specimens, confirm patient identification, and verify specimen appropriateness.
- Perform add-on testing, reprint labels, and aliquot samples while ensuring accuracy and avoiding contamination.
- Understand proper handling requirements for specimens and associated testing methodologies.
Laboratory Testing & Operations
Perform routine laboratory functions, including:
- Loading samples onto automated systems
- Managing pneumatic tube systems
- Loading/unloading blood culture samples
- Performing waived testing
Conduct daily maintenance on laboratory automation systems and instruments.
Calibrate instrumentation and perform quality control procedures.
Analysis & Quality Assurance
Understand clinical test methodologies and the significance of test results.
Collaborate with laboratory staff to verify unusual results or discrepancies.
Troubleshoot issues such as:
- Conflicting or inappropriate test orders
- Specimen integrity concerns
Participate in Quality Management (QM) initiatives by:
- Entering patient safety events into electronic systems
- Verifying manually entered test results
Reporting & Communication
- Record and report test results in accordance with procedures.
- Communicate results to ordering physicians or the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH), as required.
- Escalate complex issues to Specialists, Managers, or Directors when appropriate.
Blood Bank Support (when assigned)
- Handle blood products and maintain appropriate inventory levels.
- Coordinate communication between Blood Bank and Operating Room (OR).
- Maintain and monitor OR blood storage refrigerators.
- Ensure required testing is completed for surgical patients.
Training & Development
- Assist in the onboarding and training of new employees.
- Stay current on laboratory procedures and newly implemented tests.
Inventory & Maintenance
- Maintain inventory levels and stock supplies to ensure operational readiness.
- Clean and maintain laboratory equipment, instruments, and workspaces.
Compliance
Adhere to all:
- Quality Management (QM) standards
- Safety protocols
- Infection Control policies
- HIPAA regulations
Follow all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications
Education (Basic Knowledge)
Bachelor’s degree in a laboratory science field such as:
- Chemical Science
- Biological Science
- Clinical Laboratory Science
- Medical Technology
Experience
- Collegiate-level experience in the sciences, with a focus on laboratory environments preferred.
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to operate laboratory equipment and follow procedures accurately
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Ability to interpret laboratory processes and ensure test accuracy
- Proficiency with computers and ability to navigate online laboratory resources
- Physical and visual dexterity required for laboratory testing
- Ability to stand for extended periods and work in laboratory and OR environments
- Understanding of patient care considerations across age groups and cultural backgrounds
