Department Assistant

SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Manager of the Collection/Customer Service department, performs a variety of clerical functions to collect and ensure the reimbursement on those accounts deemed as “legal accounts” within the Brown University Health Corporate Patient Financial Services Department. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Senior Specialist with the preparation of all reports for legal accounts or accounts that are in litigation; and to ensure placements are forwarded to the appropriate agency.
  • File, process, and close all affidavits, subpoenas, litigation, liens, bankruptcies, estates, and small claims proceedings as required for the judicial system. This may require appearances in court to assist legal counsel with these legal accounts to ensure the collection of balances due to the hospital. This also includes using the online computer program (Word) to assist in creating the legal documents as required by the judicial system.
  • Respond to attorney questions to ensure accurate and timely reimbursement to the hospital.
  • Respond to legitimate requests for itemized bills as they pertain to legal accounts.
  • Document activity within the Patient Financial Services online computer system.
  • Attend both internal and external meetings as required by the Manager to keep abreast of all follow-up techniques, educational programs, and in-service meetings as they pertain to the legal accounts.
  • Participate in educational programs and in-service meetings as required.
  • Maintain quality assurance as it pertains to safety, environmental, and infection control in accordance with established system policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

  • High school diploma.
  • Business courses preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • One year of office experience including experience in patient financial services.
  • Computer literacy, and familiarity with MS Word, Excel, etc.
