Summary: Reports to the Environmental Safety Program Manager. Provides program support and technical expertise for Environment of Care-related matters in order to maintain a safe environment. Provides support in the areas of emergency management hazardous materials/ waste management and safety compliance at the Miriam Hospital main campus and Miriam Hospital licensed satellite locations offsite (example: outpatient clinics).
Responsibilities: Performs a variety of tasks in support of the emergency management program hazardous materials and waste management and safety compliance needs of the Miriam Hospital relative to emergency management preparedness response and recovery; hazardous waste operations and emergency spill response; safety compliance and associated training such as but not limited to personal protective equipment waste handling environment of care standards and hazard communication. Provides assistance to identify and control hazards develop and implement safety and improvement programs and to maintain regulatory compliance. Provides initial new-hire and contractor safety training and follow-up interaction for new employees and contractors when warranted. Provides emergency management program support in the development implementation coordination and maintenance of emergency preparedness response recovery and mitigation plans exercises procedures and programs. Assists in the coordination of disaster response or crisis management activities and disaster preparedness training. Assists with the following: Maintaining safety guidelines procedures and policies: accident management and prevention: after-action report writing for Emergency Management exercises and events monthly communication device testing and documentation (radios cell phones) Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH)/Hospital Association of Rhode Island (HARI) grant-related deliverables development of functional and full-scale emergency management drills the annual Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) update the annual Hazard Vulnerability Assessment (HVA) and evacuation team training. Assists the Environmental Safety Program Manager in areas of Safety Management Emergency Management and Hazardous Materials/Waste Management as regulated by The Joint Commission (TJC) the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) the RI Department of Health (DOH) the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and other regulatory agencies for a safe environment for employees patients and visitors. Works with managers to educate and reinforce departmental and institutional safety and emergency management procedures and serves as a technical resource for safety and emergency management-related matters. Keeps informed of federal state and local regulations affecting safety and emergency management as it relates to a healthcare setting including The Joint Commission (TJC) OSHA the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RIEMA) RIDOH and the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA). Assists with ensuring that plans and policies adhere to these specific regulations. Responds as needed to complaints of hazards odors indoor air quality as well as hazardous chemical spills.
Other information: KNOWLEDGE Bachelor�s Degree in Occupational Safety or related field program preferred. Ability to work independently and deliver results with minimum supervision. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with excellent analytical and problem solving skills. Comprehensive knowledge of the safety and health programs policies risk identification and control strategies as well as federal and state regulations. EXPERIENCE: 3-5 years� experience of direct safety or assistant safety responsibility preferably in a healthcare setting. Proven leadership experience with the ability to work within a diverse and challenging situations to achieve results in a straight forward and composed manner. Must be proficient in all facets of Emergency Management with the ability to recognize the full spectrum of potential emergency response scenarios identify critical functions and resources determine vulnerabilities and improve mitigation and recovery. Competency in Microsoft business applications including Word Excel and Powerpoint.
