Summary: Reports directly to the manager for advanced practice providers and the inpatient medical director for clinical activities with a dotted line to the electrophysiology director. Robust collaboration with the clinical nurse manager assistant clinical manager and other procedural staff including nurses and technicians expected. Performs a variety of duties to encompass but not limited to the care and management of patients with electrophysiologic disturbances in accordance with the Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital�s mission vision and values. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age-specific needs of the patients.
Responsibilities: PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIIES: Obtains and records medical histories and physical examinations in the electronic health record in a timely manner. Records pertinent progress and procedural notes and develops individualized treatment plans. Performs pre-admission testing for patients undergoing invasive cardiac procedures and obtains anesthesia consultations when appropriate. Responsible for monitoring pre-and post-procedural care in the PCU. Responsible for initiating orders for inpatient admissions and completing discharge summaries requesting follow-up appointments completing medication reconciliation and referring to cardiac rehab when appropriate for same day discharge patients. Participates in the education of patients families and caregivers regarding any procedures post-procedural care and expected outcomes and progress. Responsible for initiating life-saving measures in emergency situations. Responsible for routine and problematic cardiac device evaluations and reprogramming evaluating and treating arrhythmias evaluating and treating other symptomatic cardiac patients both urgent and non-urgent and preparing patients for upcoming device upgrades and generator changes including extractions and revisions. Actively works toward obtaining IHBRE cardiac device certification within first 5 years of employment. First assist with invasive and non-invasive cardiac procedures performed by the cardiac proceduralist in the electrophysiology laboratory. Independently performs loop recorder implants explants and direct current cardioversions when deemed proficient by Director of electrophysiology services. Responsible for meeting minimum standards for maintaining proficiency for bi-annual recredentialing. Responsible for recording procedural notes and submitting for payer reimbursement. Initiates inpatient electrophysiology consultations at The Miriam Hospital and communicates findings to electrophysiology attendings. Provides educational and liaison support to the primary care team members. Facilitates scheduling inpatient electrophysiology procedures. Participates in the care of electrophysiology outpatient ambulatory care patients by providing consults and re-evaluations in addition to urgent outpatient evaluations. May perform other duties as requested by the attending physician within the Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant scope of practice. Participates in quality improvement teams clinical research projects and other committees as needed. Maintains quality assurance safety and environmental and infection control in accordance with established hospital/department policies procedures and objectives.
Other information: BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Graduate of an accredited physician assistant or nurse practitioner program. Current Rhode Island nurse practitioner or physician assistant license that includes prescriptive privileges. Current Rhode Island DEA license required. Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or the Commission on the Accreditation of Physician Assistants to practice in the expanded role. Certification by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients and families with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. EXPERIENCE: Two years of clinical cardiology experience as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant is preferred. Must have patient care services procedures and privileges approved by the sponsoring physician. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Healthcare environment such as acute care hospital physician office and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including the use of safety equipment and protective clothing. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None.
