Medical Laboratory Scientist - Lincoln Infusion Center

Summary

The Pathology Technologist reports to the Pathology Manager and works under general supervision in accordance with department policies and procedures. This role involves performing complex clinical laboratory tests across one or more sections of the Pathology Department.

The position requires a professional level of expertise to accurately read and interpret test results, particularly abnormal or atypical findings. Key responsibilities include instrument calibration, quality control, and accurate reporting of test results.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Testing & Analysis

  • Perform complex clinical laboratory tests in one or more pathology sections.

  • Interpret and analyze test results, including abnormal findings.

  • Conduct routine and specialized testing, including:

    • Blood Bank Testing

      • Type and cross-match blood
      • Ensure compatibility between patients and donors
      • Identify incompatibility factors and atypical blood conditions
    • Hematology

      • Identify and quantify blood components (e.g., platelets, leukocytes)
      • Perform coagulation studies
    • Microbiology

      • Isolate and identify microorganisms from clinical specimens
      • Perform antibiotic susceptibility testing
    • Clinical Chemistry

      • Analyze body fluids for glucose, electrolytes, gases, drugs, and alcohol levels

Laboratory Operations

  • Prepare and evaluate solutions, reagents, and stains following standard formulas.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment; troubleshoot issues and perform minor repairs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and monitor equipment performance.
  • Conduct quality control procedures and investigate discrepancies.
  • Assist in developing and validating new laboratory tests and procedures.

Reporting & Communication

  • Record, review, and verify test results for accuracy.
  • Prepare and distribute reports to physicians and authorized personnel.
  • Communicate findings with physicians as needed.

Specimen Handling

  • Receive, log, and track specimens throughout testing processes.
  • Collect blood samples from patients when required.
  • Transport specimens safely and in accordance with protocols.

Training & Support

  • Assist in training students, residents, and new employees.
  • Support onboarding within assigned laboratory sections.

General Maintenance

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory equipment, instruments, and workspaces.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in laboratory science (e.g., biology, chemistry, clinical laboratory science, medical technology)
    OR
  • Equivalent education and experience meeting CLIA standards

Certifications

One of the following:

  • National certification (ASCP or equivalent) in:

    • Medical Laboratory Science / Technology
    • Microbiology
    • Chemistry
    • Hematology
    • Or other recognized specialty
      OR
  • Certification eligibility with completion of an accredited laboratory training program (ABHES, NAACLS, or HHS-approved)
    OR

  • Previously qualified as a technologist under CLIA standards

Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of clinical laboratory experience

  • Proficiency in operating laboratory equipment and performing tests accurately
  • Strong analytical and interpretation skills
  • Ability to maintain precision and attention to detail
  • Physical and visual dexterity required for laboratory work
  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Knowledge of patient care considerations across age groups and cultural backgrounds

  • Frequent visual strain from detailed specimen analysis
  • Regular standing, lifting, and carrying of laboratory supplies

Pay Range

$29.53-$48.72
