Nursing Assistant

Summary

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures, the Nursing Assistant assists in the care of patients and/or families from admission through discharge.

Position Definition

A Nursing Assistant is a paraprofessional trained to provide personal care and related health care assistance to individuals who are sick, disabled, or infirm. The role supports patients who are residents of or receiving services from state-licensed health care facilities or agencies. The position requires an active Nursing Assistant license issued by the Rhode Island Department of Health.

Responsibilities

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Nursing Assistant collaborates to organize work and establish priorities while performing the following duties:

  • Personal Care Skills
    Provides assistance with activities of daily living and personal hygiene.

  • Basic Nursing Assistant Skills
    Performs nursing assistant functions as outlined by the Rhode Island Department of Health, Professional Licensing and Facility Regulation.

  • Rehabilitation Skills
    Assists patients with daily activities and ambulation as appropriate.

  • Maintenance of a Safe Environment
    Reports unsafe conditions or situations to the Registered Nurse, manager, or supervisor. Identifies equipment needing repair and removes it from service when necessary.

  • Recognition and Reporting of Signs and Symptoms
    Observes, recognizes, and promptly communicates relevant patient observations to the Registered Nurse.

  • Safety and Quality of Care
    Maintains quality assurance and infection control standards in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
    Accurately documents patient care data in the electronic health record (EHR), patient care flowsheets, and clinical records.
    Demonstrates the ability to perform responsibilities during emergency or code situations.
    May function as a patient observer when required.

  • Additional Duties
    Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic Knowledge and Certifications

  • Current Rhode Island Nursing Assistant license
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Basic computer skills
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care to patients across the lifespan, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns

Experience

  • One year of experience as a Nursing Assistant preferred

Working Environment and Physical Conditions

The role is performed in healthcare environments such as acute care hospitals, physician offices, and ancillary healthcare settings. Physical demands include prolonged sitting, standing, and walking, as well as repeated bending, squatting, and stooping. The position may require lifting, turning, or repositioning patients and equipment.

Independent Action

Works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and within the scope of hospital and departmental policies and practices, as well as Rhode Island Department of Health regulations. Refers complex or specialized issues to the supervisor as needed for clarification of policies and procedures.
