SUMMARY
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and in accordance with hospital and department policies and procedures, assists in caring for patients and/or families from admission through discharge.
A Nursing Assistant is a paraprofessional trained to provide personal care and related healthcare assistance to individuals who are sick, disabled, or infirm, and who are residents of or receiving services from healthcare facilities or agencies licensed by the State. The incumbent must hold a current Nursing Assistant license issued by the Rhode Island Department of Health.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Collaborates with the Registered Nurse to organize work and set priorities. Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, performs the following:
Personal Care Skills
Basic Nursing Assistant Skills
As outlined by the Rhode Island Department of Health, Professional Licensing and Facility Regulation
Rehabilitation Skills
Assists with activities of daily living
Ambulates patients as appropriate
Maintenance of a Safe Environment
Reports unsafe conditions or situations to the Registered Nurse, manager, or supervisor
Reports malfunctioning equipment and removes it from service as needed
Recognition and Reporting of Signs and Symptoms
Communicates all pertinent patient observations to the Registered Nurse
Safety and Quality Assurance
Adheres to infection control and quality assurance standards per hospital and department policies
Accurately documents care in the electronic health record (EHR), patient care flowsheets, and clinical data records
Demonstrates ability to respond appropriately in emergency or code situations
May function as a patient observer
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Basic Knowledge:
- Current Rhode Island Nursing Assistant license
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred
- Ability to perform basic computer skills
- Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care across the lifespan, considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural diversity
Experience:
- One (1) year of experience as a Nursing Assistant preferred
WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL CONDITIONS
- Works in healthcare settings such as acute care hospitals, physicians’ offices, and ancillary healthcare enterprises
- Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking
- Frequent bending, squatting, and stooping
- May be required to lift and/or reposition patients and equipment
INDEPENDENT ACTION
- Works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse in accordance with hospital and department policies and the Rhode Island Department of Health Professional Licensing and Facility Regulation
- Refers complex or unusual issues to a supervisor when interpretation of policies or procedures is required
