Physician Assistant CVT Surgery

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Director of the Cardiovascular Institute and the Lead Supervisor for Cardiac Surgery, the candidate works in the intensive care unit managing cardiac surgery patients, including pre, intra, and post-operative management. Primary responsibility is in the ICU and includes writing admission, pre-operative, and post-operative orders, as well as autonomous management of all aspects of postoperative critical care (including management of various mechanical support devices, i.e., IABP, ECMO, Impella, CVVHD) and performing bedside medical procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Position includes days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays providing comprehensive patient care in the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative setting, with primary focus being in the intensive care unit. Responsibilities include:

  • Obtaining and recording detailed medical histories
  • Performing and recording complete and detailed physical examinations
  • Recording pertinent progress notes in the medical records
  • Preparing discharge summaries
  • Preparing initial patient orders for admission, pre-and post-operative care including diet, fluids, activity, laboratory studies, diagnostic imaging, and medications as directed by the physician in accordance with hospital procedures
  • Intra-operative second assisting if needed
  • Writing operative procedure notes and assisting in the transport of the patient from the operating room to the intensive care unit
  • Inserting and removing chest tubes/pigtail catheters
  • Removing temporary epicardial pacing wires
  • Removing sutures and staples
  • Performing arterial punctures for arterial blood gas specimens
  • Performing thoracentesis
  • Inserting nasogastric tubes, peripheral IV lines, central venous lines, arterial lines
  • Catheterizing the bladder
  • Cleaning, debriding, dressing wounds
  • Applying wound VAC dressings

May perform other duties as requested by staff physicians or attending physicians, including care of selected patients on both the medical and surgical services and initiating consultative services on behalf of the CVT surgery service.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

BASIC KNOWLEDGE

An extremely high level of analytical ability to apply post-surgical training to the treatment of patients is required. Good interpersonal skills are necessary to deal effectively with patients and nursing personnel. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE

Ideal candidates would have some critical care management experience, preferably in cardiac surgery, but highly qualified new graduates will be considered. Three to six months of on-the-job training and experience to become familiar with job responsibilities and work routines will be required. All applicants should possess a high level of ability to function with significant clinical autonomy.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Physician Assistants must be graduates of an accredited PA program with current NCCPA certification. Nurse Practitioners must be graduates of a Nurse Practitioner program and certified by the ANCC or by the AANP. Candidates should hold or be eligible for licensure in the state of Rhode Island as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner, eligible for licensure for Federal DEA certificate. Completed approved BLS/CLS courses within 2 years.

INDEPENDENT ACTION

Performs independently within the department's policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of the departmental policies and procedures are required.

$130,000.00 - $178,132.50
