Summary: Under the supervision of a Registered Physician performs several medical procedures including pre intra and post-operative management of patients assistance with surgical procedures wound care and others. Writes admission pre-operative and post-operative orders for patient care that must be countersigned by a physician. Reports directly to the Manager of the OR and Director of Perioperative services.
Responsibilities: Utilizes professional training to perform several medical procedures. All work is performed under the supervision of a physician but requires judgements and interpretations to complete. The following are the procedures that Physician�s Assistants are authorized to perform in Newport Hospital: Requests social service physical therapy radiological medical/surgical consultations on behalf of and in the name of an attending doctor in the division and/or his/her resident in an individual case. Writes admission pre-operative and post-operative orders to include:
Participates in call coverage as a First Assist for both the OR and OB for C sections.
Presents pertinent patient data at physician�s conferences and consultations where the Physician�s Assistant is reviewed and advised in patient care.
Other information: BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Bachelor�s Degree in Biology and two years of graduate study in an AMA approved Physician�s Assistant program. Current registration as Physician�s Assistant in the State of Rhode Island. An extremely high level of analytical ability to apply post-surgical training to the treatment of patients. Good interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients and nursing personnel. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. Demonstrates compliance with surgical attire policy. Performs usual closure as directed by the surgeon; sutures the peritoneum fascia subcutaneous tissue and skin. EXPERIENCE: Three months on-the-job training and experience to become familiar with job responsibilities and work routines. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Exposed to surgical procedures and patient care environments. Regularly experiences mental/visual fatigue from job pressures. INDEPENDENT ACTION: Performs independently within the departments policies and practices.Refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of the departmental policies and procedures are required. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None.
