Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator and following established policies and procedures conduct specific research protocols associated with assigned research project(s) using in vivo/or in vitro techniques. Performs minor surgery on animals. Performs animal colony maintenance. Operates monitoring equipment; collects and analyzes data using statistical methodology. Reviews literature in the field for informational purposes or to gather data.
Responsibilities: Calibrates and sets up equipment to be used in monitoring animal response and collecting data during the experiment. Performs minor surgery on research animals such as inserting monitoring catheters or tissue collection. Conducts experiments according to established protocols and research methodology using in vivo techniques. Uses in vitro techniques following standard procedures such as cell culture Western blot and qPCR. Operates monitoring equipment to image collect data and analyze data. Gathers tabulates graphs develops explanatory charts and analyzes data using statistical methodology. Maintains documentation and accurate study records of data collection logs and protocols and assists with data management. May use computer programming to assist in data analysis. Perform mouse colony maintenance routine tasks such as genotyping crossing and tagging. Reviews literature pertaining to research being conducted in the scientific area of interest for information in order to better understand the research conducted and to gather data. Performs routine laboratory cleaning and maintenance functions as required. Prepares reagents and/or drugs for use in conducting experiments. Assists with administrative and study management tasks such as planning and preparation of research protocols maintaining compliance with established safety environmental and infection control in accordance with established departmental policies developing research methodologies providing input for the interpretation of data. Reports to Principal Investigator and/or Project Director problems encountered in performing assigned activities and suggesting solutions to those problems. Works with the Principal Investigator and/or Project Director to maximize the ease of administering study protocols.
Other information: BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology Health Sciences Cell Biology Microbiology or similar field. Requires a working knowledge of statistics computer programming and research methodology. Requires a professional level of knowledge of the scientific field germane to the research being conducted. EXPERIENCE: Three to six months related experience. Works in a laboratory environment with possible exposure to human and animal serum chemical reagents and animal subjects. Hazards are minimized with adherence to established safety protocols. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None
