SUMMARY
Under limited supervision, and within established short-term goals, performs scientific, investigative research in areas related to patient care. May participate in setting short and long-term research project goals, and develops research plans to achieve these goals. Research methodologies. Conducts experiments using in vitro and/or in vivo techniques, collects and analyzes data using statistical methodology, and interprets results. Writes research presentations and papers for publications.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinates individual research projects based on the short term and long term goals and objectives established by the Director of the research laboratory. Sets up project and follows through to completion. Determines priority of experiments. May participate with principal investigator in development of short and long-term research goals and objectives of the laboratory. Designs experimental protocols to achieve the scientific objectives of the research project. Performs literature searches. Develops research methodologies to allow qualitative evaluation and interpretation of data obtained. Conducts experiments using in vivo techniques on animal and/or human serum, and in vitro techniques on research animals. Gathers, tabulates, graphs, develops explanatory charts and analyzes data using statistical methodology. May use computer programming to assist in data analysis. Interprets results of experiments using data gathered against hypotheses. Discusses results with supervisor and others involved in research project including outside investigators. Determines probable inexplicable data, e.g. methodological problems. Writes and edits presentations and papers for publication based on research performed. Participates in development of grants. Participates in development of laboratory or project budget. Monitors expenditures against budgetary allowance. Responsible for ordering equipment and supplies and maintaining inventories. Performs various diagnostic or laboratory tests in a clinical setting to assist principal investigators in carrying out clinical responsibilities. Instructs medical students, residents, interns, and other medical personnel on research, laboratory, and surgical techniques in their specialty. May provide guidance to students in design and implementation of research projects. Supervises research personnel assigned to projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Masters Degree in relevant discipline is required. Requires a working knowledge of statistics, computer programming, and research methodology. Requires an in-depth knowledge of the scientific field in which the research is being conducted. Requires the manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate complex equipment and to perform laboratory surgical procedures on animals. Analytical ability to design protocols, conduct experiments, and to analyze and interpret data. Interpersonal skills to teach instructional programs and/or supervise research personnel.
EXPERIENCE:
Two to three years working in a related field appropriate to laboratory area of study.
