SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Director/Manager of Clinical Risk Management, maintains and coordinates comprehensive, hospital-wide risk management programs which identify and reduce or eliminate situations which expose the corporation to actual or potential loss or liability. Participates in a variety of patient safety activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintains a working knowledge of the System’s insurance program. Assists in the investigation, evaluation, processing, and reporting of all claims and losses in compliance with Brown University Health insurance companies and/or governmental policies, rules and regulations. Performs record reviews, investigations and evaluations of actual or potential patient safety events that have the potential for litigation or reporting to external agencies. Works closely with other departments at the affiliate to analyze the root causes of potential or actual patient safety events.Provides guidance, assistance, and support to hospital/medical staff efforts to implement risk management and regulatory standards. Participates in the on-call program to provide 24-hour coverage for risk management related activities.Ensures compliance with guidelines and standards for the Joint Commission, Department of Health and other regulatory agencies. Reports occurrences mandated by law or regulation to the Rhode Island Department of Health, Attorney General’s office, the FDA, etc. Coordinates the follow up process and provides additional information to these agencies as needed. Acts as liaison to Department of Health investigators for on-site incident and complaint investigations.Works in collaboration with the Site Risk Manager (or designee) when investigators from the various regulatory agencies are present. Provides information to these agencies in accordance with laws and regulations. Assists Hospital departments with corrective actions and other follow up.Conducts/facilitates and/or participates in root cause analyses in response to sentinel/reportable events and other occurrences. Assists departments in developing action plans. Provides appropriate support to the in-house grievance and/or complaint program. Reviews patient safety events forwarded by patient safety specialists daily and follows up appropriately. Identifies problems and/or trends requiring further review and refers for follow-up. Prepares and presents reports on frequency, severity, and follow-up activities to various Hospital Committees upon requests. Participates in various hospital activities, including committee meeting attendance and participation in safety walk rounds. Attends Hospital and medical staff committee meetings as assigned and prepares reports for committees when requested. Provides support for integration and coordination of quality and risk management efforts through on-going availability to representatives of medical staff and hospital committees. In collaboration with the Site Risk Manager, assists with risk, patient safety, Joint Commission and other regulatory agency reviews needed. Presents risk management educational programs.Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:Degree in Nursing, with current RN licensure. Consideration may be given for other healthcare degree.EXPERIENCE:Minimum five years nursing or other similar healthcare experience, demonstrating knowledge of risk management principles, information systems, patient safety issues and quality assurance methodology. Knowledge of electronic medical records, databases, and word processing software.WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Work performed in typical office setting requiring extensive sitting with hands extended.
Pay Range:
