Summary:
The Clinical Leader I Inpatient has 24/7 accountability and is primarily responsible for coordinating patient care and daily unit operations
The Clinical Leader I Inpatient promotes the continuous advancement of evidence-based safe patient-focused care that leads to the highest quality patient outcomes and patient/family satisfaction and also assists the Director with hiring orienting and scheduling staff; performance improvement projects; and other duties as assigned.The Clinical Leader I Inpatient participates in activities to achieve clinical financial and organizational outcomes and may provide direct patient care as needed.
The position is also responsible for all aspects of the Center for Orthopedic Excellence.
Develops a strategic vision for Orthopedic Center of Excellence providing clinical and administrative oversight. Implements and promotes strategies to ensure accomplishment of objectives.
Collaborates with Senior Leadership Chief of Orthopedics and Chief of Anesthesia Strategic Communications and other key stakeholders to plan organize and manage the administrative activities of the Orthopedic Center of Excellence.
Continually evaluates in collaboration with medical leadership partner(s) core processes for redesign and reengineering to improve operations reduce cost improve quality enhance service and efficiency improve performance to enhance patient/ family satisfaction and ensure effective and efficient throughput.
Coordinates and integrates interdepartmental and intradepartmental services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Promotes the continuous advancement of evidence-based safe patient-focused care that leads to the highest quality patient outcomes and patient/family satisfaction. In addition to registered nurse responsibilities assumes supervisory tasks as assigned by the Patient Care Director.- Makes recommendations to Patient Care Director on improving quality patient outcomes
- Is able to diffuse volatile situations without engaging the Patient Care Director
- Utilizes "creative" scheduling to minimize overtime and agency usage
- Acts a s a liaison to other hospital departments
- Leads unit department or hospital committee/projects that result in operational improvements
- Develops systems that measurably reduce unusual occurrences
- Develops strategies that enhance patient/family or staff satisfaction
- Provides leadership to promote effective communication among members of the healthcare team
- Participates in evaluation of staff
Assist in coordinating staff meetings and disseminates information
- Oversees the scheduling of staff to ensure fair adequate and appropriate shift coverage based on the staffing grid staff requests and the needs of the unit
- Assist in the development implementation and evaluation of nursing practice standards that improve quality and patient outcomes
- Facilitates the delivery of the professional practice model
- Schedules staff including breaks ensuring fair and adequate coverage across all shifts
- Handles staff time and attendance issues including the approval of end of shift overtime
- Provides feedback to Patient Care Director regarding potential new hires
- Communicates any unusual issues with the Patient Care Director
- Balances personal needs with departmental needs and objectives
- Coordinates with the clinical educators and preceptors to arrange for orientees/staff to attend educational activities
- Monitor staff attendance punctuality and overtime
- Assists with the investigation of complaints and unusual occurrences
- Participates on unit department and hospital committees and projects
- Participates in peer review
- Assigns RNs to admissions post-ops and transfers
- Assigns RNs to patients on the next shift according to unit policy
- Collaborates with the clinical educator to conduct unit-based education consistent with the culture of assigned unit e.g. disease specific or age specific in-service posters etc.
- Provides leadership to promote effective communication among members of the healthcare team
- Monitors the workload on the unit assisting staff as needed
- Coordinates ADT with Patient Registration and unit RN's to ensure timely and smooth transaction to enhance patient/family satisfaction
- Monitors all CNA activities e.g. water pitchers rooms neat equipment clean and stored no excess linen/ equip. in room and call bell/IS within patient reach
- Make rounds on all patients at the beginning of the shift and communicate patient care needs to the appropriate staff
- Ensure that staff attends scheduled meetings/classes covering patient assignments as needed
- Monitor staff adherence to unit hospital and regulatory policy and procedures
- Transcribes/verify physicians' orders as needed
- Checks that the night RN's have performed Glucometer quality control checked emergency carts and tested the defibrillator
- Coordinates interdisciplinary rounds
- Assists patients/families and physicians who have questions or complaints
- Makes sure that patient call lights are answered promptly and courteously
Clinical Practice
- Uses knowledge of unit operations and organizational goals to guide decisions about patient care and use of resources.
- Utilizes patient data to develop outcome-driven plans using theoretical and experiential knowledge
- Provides consultation to nursing staff and uses opportunities in clinical setting to teach others either 1:1 or in groups
- Supports innovative approaches to nursing practice roles and utilization of resources to meet challenging organization requirements

- Consults with Physician Case Manager or other member of the healthcare team to assure consistency with the plan of care in relation to the patient�s length of stay
- Reviews plan of care with designated member of the healthcare team initially and changes as patient�s condition warrants; assures patient goals are achieved within agreed upon timeframe
- Evaluates patient responses to the plan of care; chooses reasonable alternative actions when existing plans are ineffective
- Informs Physician and appropriate members of the healthcare team when there is a change in patient�s progress
- Increases monitoring in response to warning signs and initiates preventative measures based on knowledge and experience
- Identifies documents and reports to appropriate personnel deviations from clinical service or regulatory standards
- Secures patient property or valuables per hospital policy
- Uses all available resources to plan care and improve professional practice
- Complies with changes in hospital policies and procedures within designated timeframe
- Within role of Clinical Leader I Inpatient holds others accountable for their decisions actions and assignments and for clinical service regulatory and operational standards of unit and organization
- Delegates aspects of patient care to assistive personnel within their skill and expertise; helps assistive personnel organize and set priorities for work

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Five years nursing experience preferred; previous supervisory experience preferred. For specialty areas related experience and or certification may be required.
- Knowledge of Meditech/Epic software
- Able to analyze data synthesize and summarize information and make judgments regarding patient care and daily unit operations.
- Able to support and mentor staff promote outstanding customer service encourage interdisciplinary/interdepartmental collaboration and contribute to the collegial governance process.
- Knowledgeable of hospital policies and procedures
- Knowledgeable of performance improvement methodologies
- Requires effective use of problem solving negotiating conflict management team leading and team building skills
- Must possess expert organizational skills
EDUCATION:
- BSN strongly preferred; MSN a plus.
- BLS and MA RN License required
