Temp Hire - Summer Youth

SUMMARY

The goal of this program is to inspire public high school students who have completed their sophomore year to gain experience that will help them develop a path forward to become the next generation of leaders in cancer research, treatment, and prevention.

The Student Scholars will shadow some of the nation’s top cancer clinicians and scientists at Rhode Island Hospital, Miriam Hospital, and Hasbro Children’s Hospital and at state-of-the-art laboratory research facilities at the Brown University Health Cancer Institute and the Brown Cancer Center. They will see oncology patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings, participate in conferences, and in training sessions.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• See patients in the oncology clinic with hematologists and oncologists
• Work with specialists in the fields of pathology, surgery, radiation, and genetics
• Be on time for all sessions generally beginning at 8:30 am
• Participate in tumor boards and other teaching conferences
• Work with respect to all hospital staff and patients
• Do outside reading as assigned by cancer specialists
• Participate in laboratory training

Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

High school student in Providence County, RI who is completing sophomore year of high school at program entry and has been accepted into the Future Gen Cancer Scholars Program.

• High school student in Providence County, RI who is completing sophomore year of high school at program entry
• Must reside in Providence County, RI and attend public school in Providence, Central Falls, or Pawtucket or be nominated as Papitto Scholar from Bay View Academy in East Providence or Tarantino Scholar from St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket RI
• Available to work Monday – Friday
• Have an interest in healthcare
• Demonstrate a positive attitude and willingness to learn
• 16-19 years of age
