Blood Bank Manger - Brown Health System Operations

Summary

The Manager, Pathology reports to the Director of Pathology Administration and the Medical Director of the laboratory section. This role is responsible for the administrative and technical management of one or more pathology laboratory sections within an academic medical center.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating administrative functions such as personnel management, budget preparation and analysis, and financial/statistical reporting
  • Developing and monitoring new programs
  • Maintaining and updating procedural manuals
  • Supporting initiatives to increase outpatient testing market share

Key Responsibilities

People & Leadership

  • Interview, hire, schedule, train, assign, and evaluate staff
  • Address employee relations issues, including discipline and termination when necessary
  • Provide ongoing training and professional development
  • Supervise and support laboratory personnel

Operations & Administration

  • Ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures
  • Develop and implement new policies and procedure manuals
  • Collect and analyze data for budget preparation and monitoring
  • Prepare operational and statistical reports for leadership review

Laboratory Management

  • Oversee daily workflow and quality control processes
  • Maintain accurate records, statistics, and documentation
  • Troubleshoot laboratory equipment and coordinate maintenance
  • Evaluate and implement new equipment and supplies
  • Ensure availability of necessary laboratory supplies

Collaboration & Communication

  • Maintain regular communication with:

    • Other laboratory sections
    • Hospital departments
  • Support communication of test results and procedures

  • Ensure adherence to CAP, Joint Commission, and safety standards

  • Identify and implement opportunities to expand outpatient testing services

  • Support clinical education for students and residents
  • Contribute to research and special projects as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in:

    • Medical Laboratory Science
    • Medical Technology
    • Or a related field (or equivalent per CLIA standards)
  • National certification (or eligibility) via:

    • ASCP or equivalent
  • Advanced or Master’s degree (preferred)

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong administrative and organizational skills
  • Deep technical expertise in laboratory procedures, equipment, and controls
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proven ability to lead and develop teams
  • Additional formal training in technical or administrative areas (up to 1 year preferred)

Experience

  • 3–5 years of progressively responsible laboratory experience
  • 2–3 years in a lead or supervisory role within a laboratory setting

Pay Range

$95,264.00-$157,206.40
